1991 – Laurier 25 Mt. Allison 18
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks took home the Vanier Cup for the first and only time with a 25-18 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties before more than 30,000 fans at the SkyDome.
Laurier running back Andy Cecchini carried 22 times for 130 yards and tied a Vanier Cup record with three touchdowns.
The Golden Hawks jumped out to an early 11-0 lead in the first quarter as Cecchini ran one yard for his first major.
The Mounties cut the margin to a converted touchdown by halftime on a 38-yard field goal and a 28-yard single by Eric Deegan.
Laurier took a large lead in the third quarter on a two-yard run by Cecchini and a 19-yard pass from Bill Kubas to Cecchini that put the score at 24-4. The Mounties, however, staged a spirited comeback as Grant Keaney ran 27 yards for a touchdown and slotback Mark Huys caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Sean Hickey.
The Laurier defence tightened up late in the game and preserved the victory.
Cecchini won the Ted Morris Trophy as the game's outstanding player.
The Golden Hawks were successful in 1991 after losses in 1966, 1968 and 1972 when they were known as Waterloo Lutheran University.
